The CW working on 'The Graysons'. Robin before he was Robin, in the style of Smallville. Oh...oh dear.

Like Smallville, The Graysons will take elements of the character from DC Comics continuity, and put its own spin on it. In the original origin of Robin, there was virtually no backstory given, save that his parents died as a result of a gangster’s extortion scheme at the Haly Circus, where the Flying Graysons were performing. Some backstory has been added in since that story in 1940’s Detective Comics #38, but never with the scope that The Graysons is aiming at.

From Variety:

In the one-hour "Graysons," which will be set in modern times, young DJ will face challenges involving first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up. Souders and Peterson have come up with an original take on the character.

RUN AWAY, DICK. RUN VERY VERY FAST.

Why are they calling him "DJ"? Shouldn't his initials be "RJ"?

THIS IS ALL SO VERY WRONG.

(Except maybe there will be Jason Todd, that infuriating local STREET KID who gives Dick, excuse me, DJ, a hard time.)

"DJ" makes me think of Roseanne's youngest kid. NO. It's not the end of the world that the guy's name is Dick, ok? OKAY.

...dude, I'd give anything for some Dick/Jason rumbling.

I'm *also* having trouble with this because in my weird ass brain, I (apparently! news to me!) still believe that Dick joined Bruce when he was about eight or ten. *shudder*

And there will probably be Tim Drake, the school nerd, or something. They'll all be classmates! NO. This is all very incorrect.

Now, see, if there were a Timmy and a Jay and even glowering millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, I might be okay, as the source's inherent homoeroticism were preserved. But you know that instead there'll be saucy redhead Babs and [inserttokenethnicityhere] Roy Harper. Though if there were a Native Roy Harper? I'd be ALL OVER THAT.

*clutches at straws*

Yeah, probably snotty rich girl Babs. :\ Roy as Dick's BFF would be cool, except they'd probably kill him off as the cliffhanger to season 1.

The more I think about this, the more HORRIFIED I become! I didn't think that was possible. DDD:

I don't think they've read that many actual issues of the comics.

WE CAN ONLY HOPE.

I. Just. WHAT? Is he even going to be in the circus anymore? A Bruce Wayne, Snotty Prep School Kid series would work better. If, you know, we absolutely *have* to have a Smallville-style Batshow.

Gloss and I were speculating upthread; a high-school class with Snotty Rich Girl Babs, Pre-Junkie Roy, Creepy Little Timmy, and Jason The Thug. I think I need to go lie down.

JASON WANTS OUT OF THIS SHOW ALREADY.

Jube and I have long speculated about how awesome a Gotham Knights-style Batfamily-centered show would be. But only if it were on HBO and they didn't play keep-away with the characterization. Twenty-five percent crimefighting, seventy-five percent familial dynamics and dealing with Bruce's crazy.

So do I! As long as they find someone sufficiently pretty and bendy to play Dick.

The name keeps making me think that this will be the Roma version of The Huxtables. But I don't actually think that at all.

God, there is not nearly enough DO NOT WANT in the world for this. Diiiiiiiiiiiick! My favorite DC character.
