Despite the fact that most of the LGBTfest process was weirding me out, both because of the overmodding and the tenor of the prompts, I ended up reading the prompt list today and signing up for two of them. They're fairly open-ended ones that I think I can put a positive spin on, and maybe bring some happy to the fest o'pain. Unless I get distracted and don't write them at all.

The moral of the story is that when I'm bored at work, I make really random decisions. Solution: to seek out more stuff to do at work, I suspect.

The crock-pot lasagna did not turn out well.

I'm not sure if it's an inherent flaw of crock-pot lasagna or because I improvised with the recipe due to ingredient-purchase fail.

If I try again, you will all be the first to know. But attempt one, bust.

I gave in to my baser instincts and bought yarn. It is yellow. Now I just have to find a pattern I like and make myself a nice spring-y scarf so I can take sunshine with me wherever I go.

...wow, I frightened *myself* right there.

I finished season 6 of West Wing! Yep, the face-punching continued right to the end. Now to start season 7 (I got them for Christmas, so it would be silly not to watch them, I guess), and then I can go back and rewatch earlier-season episodes and remember when everyone was HAPPY. God. And then I'll start Chuck.

I am going to two rock shows this weekend. \o/ That will be excellent. Also exhausting. And I need to remember to do my laundry during the week or I won't have any clothes come next Monday.

Tonight for dinner, there shall be crock-pot lasagna. Wish me luck.

Um. Hi. ::waves sheepishly:: Gloss nudged me on e-mail and reminded me that, er, even if I'm reading over here, which I have been, if I don't manage to muster my words to comment or post...nobody knows that.

I am not an Internet supergenius.

I have been reading and following along, and I think of you guys often! I think my posting problem is...well, a) I don't use a client, so multi-posting isn't an option, and b) I feel comfortable spamming the hell out of my LJ all of the trivial nonsense that crosses my mind because that's the space I've built over there; the space over here is different, and it seems rude(?) to inflict my every random mid-workday thought about Bruce Springsteen on you guys.

But there must be a middle ground, and I will find it.

    What I've Been Reading:
Richard Davenport-Hines' biography of Auden, which I found frustratingly underwhelming and scattershot.

Michael Chabon's Wonder Boys, which I'm enjoying quite a lot, even though Likeadeuce and I had to have a wry conversation about it and Mysteries of Pittsburgh (which is one of her favorite books, but still) being his Douchey Young Guy Confessional Novels and how that really never goes as well as you think it's going to.

And I think next up is either Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra, or that March book that won awards a few years back and made fanficcers roll their eyes en masse. Deuce wants me to read it so we can discuss it, and I'm suggestible.

I still have two trades of Immortal Iron Fist floating around here that I need to finish so I can give back to her, too. Crap.

Viewing: I'm stalled mid-season 6 of West Wing, because the show seems to be delighting in punching my favorite characters in the face over and over again, seriously, WHY.

I watched the premiere of Dollhouse last night and enjoyed it; very much a pilot, but I think there's room to grow and be interesting, there.

I am not watching BSG, because I think it's better for my mental and emotional health to consume it all at once after it's over, thoroughly spoiled, instead of having a weekly rage blackout at Ron Moore. I loved this show and these characters so incredibly much and the way Moore has chosen to be about...everything I loved makes me too irrational and I became That Fan, so I had to stop. I actually stopped, um, before the hiatus, so nearly a year ago. But, you know. As we have established, not so good at articulating things.

I think when I finally get through West Wing, I'm going to watch Chuck. I have the first season DVDs sitting on my shelf waiting for me to get my shit together and not lose myself RPing for hours most nights. I think that point's coming. I go through cycles and right now it feels like RPing might be coming to a close for a little while. Maybe that means I'll turn that energy toward writing again. I'd like to. (Which wouldn't solve the problem of the unwatched DVD sets, though! Ah, choices.)

Knitting: Haven't been, would like to, maybe need to cast on another scarf just to get my fingers moving. Maybe next paycheck I can get a little bit of pretty silly fluffy yarn for a spring scarf.

Kitty: She is bad and adorable and noisy and rambunctious and has a scrunchy little monkey face and I do love her dearly.

Happy New Year, IJ! I spent the changeover with comics Likeadeuce and Harmonyangel from LJ, which meant mostly talking about comics. And reading comics; mostly old Power Man and Iron Fist issues, and also the Green Lantern and Green Arrow thing from the 70s (including the Roy on heroin issues!). The following has been resolved:

    * Luke Cage is made of win
    * Danny/Luke is required
    * Danny/Luke/Misty/Colleen is also required
    * Hal Jordan is kind of delightful
    * Hal/Roy is desired, which makes me a bad person
    * Hal/Jason is also desired, which makes me a *strange* person
    * Seriously, though, Luke/Danny, how so great?

We also saw Slumdog Millionaire, which was really fun. And I outlined the Dick/Jason fic. So! So.

    Happy New Year, redux. <3

Yesterday Likeadeuce-from-LJ came to visit, and it was great fun; she brought me a giant stack of comics and we talked about lots of fangirly things. We also went to a comic/book swap hosted by someone from her flist, which was fun, though I was wayyyy out of my depth to be discussing any sort of comics canon with these people (case in point: discussion of Oliver Quinn, I said something vague about "but he was mean to Roy" and then IT WAS ON about how very Wrong On The Internet I was). Also, saying "Really all I'm interested in in the DCU is Jason Todd" will get you a lot of blank stares from normal fans. :(

But! Deuce loaned me the three trades so far of the current incarnation of Immortal Iron Fist, and I'm all asquee. I read the first one last night, and Danny Rand is just great, and the appearance by Luke, Misty, and Colleen makes me want to go find some Heroes For Hire. So awesome. (Luke/Danny/Misty/Colleen foursome alllllllways.)

I'm having the critical twinges regarding Danny Rand the white-boy scion of a megacompany being The Champion of Mystical Asian Kingdom, but, well, old-school Marvel backstory and I'm not sure what's to be done about it.

I also love how the Iron Fist mythology *really* seems to parallel the Slayer mythology, and I want to know if this is from the old Iron Fist stuff and so maybe inspired Joss, or if Fraction and Brubaker in re-launching it borrowed *from* Joss. And I want like a million fics about the past Iron Fists. Especially the female one we glimpse briefly in the first trade. Maybe there will be more about her. Deuce seemed to think there was, but she didn't remember very well.

Also also, while I'm being ridiculous about this anyway, there needs to be some kind of Danny Rand porn that incorporates an "Iron Fist" pun. What?

In other news, Racetrack panicked at Deuce being in her house, because she is antisocial, and bit the hell out of me when I tried to pick her up and move her, so that wasn't quite so great. And I really need to do laundry and buy groceries today, but I don't WANT to. So. Dilemma.

Job: good but omg busy. They keep me running all day. Weirdly, being crazy-busy makes me want to write; I have a bunch of notes scribbled throughout my notepad. Including some Dick/Jason ideas; I think I might have found the MacGuffin to tie the thing together. Maybe. I hope. I'm not sure if it's making Jason too emo. Guess it all depends on how it's handled, as ever.

Living situation: good good! My roommate is a saintly person who seems to find Racetrack's more devilish tendencies cute. :D I am trying to be a good roomie as well.

DC: Tricky! Especially the expressways. I went down to Virginia to visit an LJer last weekend, and got hoplessly lost on the way back.

Everything else: Wait, there are other things? I need to sleeeeeep.

I did finish reading Kavalier & Clay, *finally*. Weaving in the actual comic writers and artists at the end there made me smile. I kind of want to write fic, but I'm not sure. Let it percolate some more, maybe.

Um. Is there anything else any of you are interested in me talking about at all? I don't want to bore anybody, but I feel bad about not engaging enough over here. :\

    Today I'm going to:

    * Go exploring my neighborhood and see how long it takes to walk to the metro station
    * Work on my Yuletide fic ::wince::
    * Meet up with an LJ-person for fangirling
    * Buy a shower curtain
    * Stop listening to Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's cover of "Psycho Killer." You are never going to learn the French interlude, Samantha. Especially not the way Jason and Browan mumble their way through it. Probably because THEY don't know it, actually.
    * *Not* read the fic I just saw that involves Jason Todd becoming a priest. That cannot possibly end anywhere but tears. (but maybe it's awesome and if I don't click I'll never know! oh dilemma)

What are you all doing today?

What the Internet informs me was the last bit of Bruce Wayne's internal monologue in Batman RIP:
    Cut for your protection )

Hi, hi, hi! I am in DC! I am pirating wireless! It is all very awesome and I think I will like it here a lot!

Apparently tomorrow is the big RIP day

There are rumours that Batman will suffer a gruesome end when his sidekick Robin goes over to "the dark side" and destroys him in a terrible betrayal.

Tim would never do that! >:| Besides, that would fuck up the Battle For The Cowl...I still can't type that with a straight face.

Tomorrow I'm also driving the final leg of the journey and moving into my new apartment, which won't have Internet for a little while. I expect severe withdrawal symptoms.

This is a very important question.

Random thoughts while rereading Kavalier & Clay:

    1. Chabon's love and respect for comics as a genre really make those sections shine. And also makes me smile.
    2. Wow, fully half of this book went over my head the first time I read it. Wayyyyyy over my head. No wonder I remembered not liking it; I finished it feeling dissatisfied and confused, like I was *missing* something...because I was.
    3. The person I saw on LJ a while back saying that this and Yiddish Policeman's Union have put her off Chabon for good because he's writing "niche" stuff that she "just doesn't connect with" can go jump in a hole. Make an effort.
    4. The Escapist is so totally Captain America. <3
    5. I fangirl over Joe, as I think Chabon intended (and does a bit himself), but oh, Sammy. Sammy makes my heart ache.

Still have 200 pages to go. We are at, I vaguely remember, the Part Where Things Get A Bit Odd.

In other news, Racetrack is terribly cute, even if an online quiz informs me that she's 91% likely to be plotting to kill me. I'm moving to DC in two weeks. And it turns out that hermiting in my apartment all the time and refusing human contact actually prompts me to accomplish *nothing at all*, rather than to write things. Bah.

Jesus, people, if you're going to rant about socialism and how the only place it's ever worked is Scandinavia and that's because it's supported by oil money...well, for one thing, I can't take you seriously at all, and for another, have you thought about picking up a book, maybe? A dictionary, to start with, and then you can move on to some basic political theory. If you feel up to it.

    Morons.

To make up for bringing flail and woe:

This is a very good little Dick/Jason scene, set when Jay is Robin.
    9:32 am
The CW working on 'The Graysons'. Robin before he was Robin, in the style of Smallville. Oh...oh dear.

Like Smallville, The Graysons will take elements of the character from DC Comics continuity, and put its own spin on it. In the original origin of Robin, there was virtually no backstory given, save that his parents died as a result of a gangster’s extortion scheme at the Haly Circus, where the Flying Graysons were performing. Some backstory has been added in since that story in 1940’s Detective Comics #38, but never with the scope that The Graysons is aiming at.

    From Variety:

In the one-hour "Graysons," which will be set in modern times, young DJ will face challenges involving first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up. Souders and Peterson have come up with an original take on the character.

RUN AWAY, DICK. RUN VERY VERY FAST.

::narrows eyes:: You know, I'm a forgiving person, but I swear, if the Obama RFD shushes me or slams a door one more time, I'm going to point out that I *don't actually work for him* and then I'm going to kick him in the crotch.

    (Probably not really, sadly. Sigh.)

We need some Jason Todd in this place.

Following a conversation (which was entirely unproductive, I might add) the other day about how, exactly, one tells if one is having a nervous breakdown, my mom has decided to send me yarn and knitting needles. I...yeah, okay, something entirely mindless, like a garter-stitch scarf, maybe, might be soothing. The sweater is apparently on eternal hold. Or at least after-the-election hold.

In the category of awesome, though, watching what people are coming up with over at the OTW wiki is fun! Sometimes in a "cool!" way and sometimes in a "how's that selective memory working out for you?" way. Excellent.
